Post subject: | Interesting Note on Zero-fret |
I dropped my ukulele on concrete and have discovered the vulnerability of nylon strings over a zero-fret. Most of the weight in the neck is in the head and tuners, this causes the instrument to fall head-down and exposes the zero-fret as the most likely point of contact with the ground, concrete or rock. The strings are caught between a rock and a zero-fret. I lost one string and damaged two. I am partial to Aquilla strings so I tried Oasis strings as a replacement. The Oasis tenor low-G warms tune-up faster, are louder, are a bit brighter than Aquillas. They probably have higher tension. A minor hazard that I hadn't considered before. A nut provides some degree of protection. Bob ![]() |

I guess the point is to avoid testing gravity's effects. Thx for the pointer on strings. |

![]() ![]() @ernie: http://www.stringsbymail.com is my usual string source, and carries Oasis. They are most likely much higher tension than normal. I tried some of their guitar strings once and they feel really tight even tuned down a step... and that wasn't even the high tension set ![]() |

Why are oasis strings higher tension? Are they heavier gauge?? |

I know that they are fluorocarbon and it may be denser and stronger like Worths . I will measure the diameters and post it . Who else would take a dial-gage on vacation. Bob ![]() |

Ernie: The string diameters (measured using my dial calipers). G- 0.030" C- 0.030" E- 0.029" A- 0.024" The A-string broke twice over a month. I still prefer the tone of aquilla's but they are not quite as loud. Bob ![]() |
